Notable orchestral collaborators include The Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Orchestre National de France, Orquesta Nacional de España, as well as all the British and German radio orchestras, under conductors such as Christoph von Dohnányi, Kurt Masur, Klaus Mäkelä, Christian Thielemann, Andris Nelsons, Daniel Harding, Manfred Honeck, Simone Young, Vladimir Jurowski, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Karina Canellakis and Myung-Whun Chung.
Highlights of the 2025/26 season include concerto performances with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, RTVE Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony, NOSPR Katowice, National Symphony Orchestra Taiwan, and the Korean National Symphony Orchestra.
Recent highlights include collaborations with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, the CBSO, the Munich Philharmonic, RSB Berlin, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and the Spanish National Orchestra and Choir, among others.
A dedicated chamber musician, Gerhardt regularly performs with pianists Steven Osborne and Alexei Volodin, as well as the Alliage Saxophone Quintet. The upcoming season sees Gerhardt appearing at Muziekgebouw Amsterdam – performing alongside musicians such as Gidon Kremer or Alina Ibragimova — heading to Montreal with Steven Osborne and playing a solo recital of all Bach suites at Wigmore Hall.
Having recorded extensively for Hyperion, Gerhardt’s album of the complete Bach suites was one of The Sunday Times’s top 100 recordings of 2019. His album of Shostakovich cello concertos with the WDR Sinfonieorchester and Jukka-Pekka Saraste was awarded an ICMA in 2021. Gerhardt has won several awards, and his recording of Unsuk Chin’s cello concerto, released by Deutsche Grammophon, received a BBC Music Magazine Award and was shortlisted for a Gramophone Award in 2015.
As Artist in Residence, Alban Gerhardt has performed at Wigmore Hall, with the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Oregon Symphony. He was also Artist in Focus at the Aldeburgh Festival and the SchumannFest, and since 2025, he has been Artistic Director of the Young Euro Classics Festival in Berlin, together with composer Mathias Hinke.
Gerhardt is passionate about outreach and shares his experience and his music with audiences in schools, hospitals, and young offenders’ institutions.
Alban Gerhardt performs with a Matteo Goffriller cello from 1710.
ORQUESTRA SIMFÒNICA ILLES BALEARS
The Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra was established in 1988 by the Balearic Islands Public Foundation for Music, following the initiative of the Balearic Government, the Palma City Council, and the Council of Mallorca.
L’Orquestra, as known today, began its first concert season in September 1989, with principal conductor Luís Remartínez and soloist Teresa Berganza. Past principal conductors include Luis Remartínez (1989-1994), Philippe Bender (1994-1997, 2005-2009), Salvador Brotons (1997-2000, 2009-2013), Geoffrey Simon (2001-2002), Edmon Colomer (2002-2005), Josep Vicent (2013-2014), and co-principal conductor Joji Hattori (2014-2018). Since 2014, Pablo Mielgo has served as its principal conductor.
L’Orquestra hosts its concert season at the Auditorium de Palma, the Teatre Principal de Palma, the Trui Teatre, and the Auditori de Manacor. It also gives special concerts in Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa, and Formentera.
The OSIB regularly takes part in the opera seasons organised by the Fundació Teatre Principal in Palma and the Amics de l’Òpera in Maó (Menorca).
During its summer season, the OSIB hosts the Estius Simfònics festival at Bellver Castle and collaborates with other festivals, such as the Pollença International Music Festival and the Santanyí Music Festival.
It has offered concerts outside the Balearic Islands in Donostia-San Sebastián, Bilbao, Santander, Valladolid, Burgos, València, Zaragoza and Oviedo. Additionally, it has performed at the National Auditorium, the Teatro Real in Madrid, and the Palau de la Música in Barcelona, among others.
It has performed in Perpignan, Cannes, Prades de Conflent, Zurich, the Musikverein in Vienna, Radio Hall France in Paris, and the UN Human Rights Chamber in Geneva.
In 2020, the OSIB was the first orchestra to return to the stage after the COVID-19 lockdown. It is worth mentioning the altruistic performances given by L’Orquestra’s chamber groups on their YouTube channel, under the title Sonam per tu (We Play for You), during the COVID-19 pandemic.
L’Orquestra regularly takes part in fundraising concerts for Projecte Home Balears, Amics de la Infància, and Aspanob.
One of L’Orquestra’s objectives is to promote works by composers from the Balearic Islands, such as the premiere of the opera L’arxiduc by Antoni Parera Fons, with a libretto by Carme Riera, a member of the Royal Spanish Academy. In addition to its artistic programming, it carries out educational activities through school auditions and family concerts.
Since 2017, its Petita Simfònica (Little Symphony Orchestra) project has been a highlight, giving children the chance to perform alongside their teachers in L’Orquestra.
Since 2016, the OSIB Acadèmia has provided a programme for young instrumentalists pursuing advanced studies in their instrument, enabling them to collaborate in the symphony orchestra’s concerts.
Since 1989, L’Orquestra has performed alongside internationally renowned soloists such as Teresa Berganza, Alicia de Larrocha, Maurice André, Jean Pierre Rampal, János Starker, Misha Maisky, Ilona Tokody, Luis Claret, Salvatore Accardo, Renata Scotto, Pilar Jurado, Lola Casariego, Yelena Obraztsova, Maria de los Ángeles, Juan Diego Flórez, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Vladimir Spivakov, Emmanuel Pahud, Khatia Buniatishvili, Giuliano Carmignola, Valentina Nafornita, Celso Albelo, Kiri Te Kanawa, Joaquín Achúcarro, María Bayo, Simón Orfila, Joan Pons, María José Montiel, Javier Perianes, Katia and Marielle Labèque, Johan Botha, Lisa Larsson, Francisco Fullana, Maria del Mar Bonet, Andrea Bocelli and Raphael, among others.
Among many other conductors, L’Orquestra has been led by Odón Alonso, Arpad Joó, Rafael Nadal, Franz Paul Decker, Salvador Más, Antoni Ros-Marbá, Matthias Aeschbacher, Enrique García Asensio, Giuliano Carella, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Víctor Pablo Pérez. Awards and distinctions:
- Rotary Club de Mallorca Humanitats Award 2010-2011, May 2011.
- VI Onda Cero Mallorca Awards 2017, music category.
- Recognition from the Fundació Projecte Jove Balears, 2019.
- Gold Medal of the Balearic Islands, 2020, the highest distinction awarded by the autonomous community.
Currently, the Simfònica is building its new headquarters, the Caixa de Música, which will serve as an international benchmark – as a venue for musical performances – and will be the first public building of an orchestra in Spain, developed through strong public-private collaboration.
